Most recent GAPS research includes to address the new challenges of using Signal Processing in combination with Machine Learning techniques to address large scale applications.

A recent example of GAPS activities in this fieldis its participation in Drivies project, which as been developed in collaboration with Telefónica. GAPS is providing signal processing on smartphone sensor signals for Telefónica R&D suitable for deployment on the majority of recent IOS and Android smartphones.

GAPS has prpovided patented technology to Telefonica for:

  • Automatic detection that a smatphone is riding in a vehicle
  • Automatic detection of driving events such as speeding, mobile phone distractions while driving, and abrupt driving patterns (accelerations and braking). It also informs the user if driving is efficient from a fuel usage perspective.

With Drivies, Telefónica advances its goal of placing technology and innovation within reach of everyone to improve better quality of life and positive societal development.


This technology is also been used to develop innovative Insurance Telematics services based on smartphone sensor signals.
